Sunday Hogback/Bear Creek Lake

On Sunday I ventured out a little too late, as is my way, and got very little running done. Early sunsets are tough -- although they are actually getting later now.

In a last-minute call I hiked up the hogback southeast of Morrison. Not much has changed since the last time I was there, it's a crazy-steep bushwhack up a ridgeline, but at least this time I got pretty high.

It's very similar to Bear Peak in Boulder as it's basically part of the same rock upheaval as the Flatirons, just not quite as high. Tough to walk on the top though!

The true high point appeared to be around 25 rugged minutes away, and only about 30 feet higher, so I turned around to save it for another day. I wanted to get some real running in as well.

I grabbed a couple of cans on the way down. Not a fan of trash in parks.

Bear Creek Lake was pretty near dusk, although like the hogback it was cold and windy. Thank goodness for the light shell I was wearing.

Distance was 5.77 miles, time 1:54 (moving 1:18), elevation gain/loss 810 feet, avg. pace 19:48 (moving 13:35), and best pace 7:21.

I passed my biggest annual total recently, around 1,230 miles. Not huge but it's decent for me, especially since I was injured and/or sick for a couple of months in 2012. At some point I stopped talking about miles and days much, because it suggests an obsession with training or whatever that I simply don't have. But it's interesting to see the numbers. And it's a lot of good times in the outdoors.
