Thus far I have not been inclined to do many repeats of nearby 14ers -- I've run them all at least once -- yet I haven't been able to get down to the Sangres (with the exception of my Crestone Needle non-summit), Elks or San Juans for new ones.
This is where I was headed, from the car at the trailhead. I think Shavano is actually the tiny triangular summit in the lower right:
The climb through the forest is pretty steep; right up a rocky ravine. However, once you hit treeline things open up, the slope relents, and I was able to get a few running paces in, even on the saddle at 13,400 feet.
The summit of Shavano from the saddle:
The party on top. Got up there in a bit over 2 hours.
Zero pictures of the descent, since bad weather was blowing in fast and I wanted to escape. I had a little extra time along the CO trail for a couple of extra miles, rounding up to 10-plus for the first part of the day.
From a distance, the Shavano area wrapped in clouds:
Distance was 10.64 miles, time 3:59 (moving 3:07), elevation gain/loss 4,603 feet, avg. pace 22:28 (moving 17:39), and best pace 6:48.
